Federal and state payers are using financial incentives to promote social risk screening and interventions in health care delivery. In this study, clinician teams from Oregon community health centers (CHCs) were interviewed to understand the perception and influence of fee-for-service payments on CHC engagement in social risk screening and services. It was found that staff had limited awareness of these financial incentives and that they likely do not affect CHC social care practices. Design changes for CHCs might include incentivizing patient participation, support for the CHCs’ social care workforce, resources directly for social supports.
